✈️ COMMERCIAL PILOT LICENCE · CPL(A)

CPL minimum hours,
integrated and modular.

The integrated CPL(A) course needs at least 150 hours of flying training. The modular route needs 200 hours of flight time, 100 of them as pilot in command. Either way there's night, instrument, cross-country and complex aeroplane time to tick off. PilotMetrics tracks all of it.

THE MINIMUMS

CPL(A) requirements

The UK CAA and EASA share the same Part-FCL minimums. These are the minimums PilotMetrics checks your logbook against.

Minimums only, not legal advice: you also need the theory exams, medical and skill test, and your school and authority decide when you're ready. Check the current regulation for your licence.

WHAT IT MEANS

CPL logbook terms, explained

Integrated vs modular
An integrated course trains you from scratch to CPL in one continuous programme at one school. The modular route builds the licence up in stages, usually starting from a PPL and building hours in between.
PIC and SPIC
Pilot in command time. On an integrated course, up to 55 of the 70 PIC hours can be student pilot-in-command (SPIC): flown as PIC with an instructor on board who only observes.
The 300 NM cross-country
A VFR cross-country of at least 540 km (300 NM) as PIC, with full-stop landings at two aerodromes other than where you departed.
Complex aeroplane
At least four seats, a variable pitch propeller and retractable landing gear: 5 hours are needed.
UPRT
Upset prevention and recovery training: recognising and recovering from unusual attitudes and stalls.

CPL QUESTIONS

CPL FAQ

How many hours do you need for a CPL? ▼
On an integrated CPL(A) course under UK CAA and EASA Part-FCL (Appendix 3 C), at least 150 hours of flying training, including 80 hours dual and 70 hours as PIC. On the modular route (FCL.325.A), at least 200 hours of flight time, including 100 hours as PIC.
Can simulator time count towards a CPL? ▼
On the integrated course, up to 5 hours of the flying training can be in an FSTD, and up to 5 of the 10 hours of instrument instruction can be in a simulator.
How many night hours does a CPL need? ▼
5 hours of night flight time, including 3 hours of dual instruction with at least 1 hour of cross-country navigation, and 5 solo take-offs and 5 solo full-stop landings.
Does PilotMetrics count SPIC as PIC? ▼
Yes, up to the limit the course allows: on the integrated CPL, up to 55 hours of SPIC count towards the 70 hours of PIC.
