✈️ PRIVATE PILOT LICENCE · PPL(A)

PPL minimum hours,
and where you are against them.

Under UK CAA and EASA Part-FCL, the PPL(A) needs at least 45 hours of flight instruction, including 25 hours dual and 10 hours supervised solo. The FAA private pilot certificate needs at least 40 hours. PilotMetrics tracks your PPL training against every one of these minimums.

THE MINIMUMS

PPL(A) requirements by authority

The UK CAA and EASA share the same Part-FCL minimums. These are the minimums PilotMetrics checks your logbook against.

WHAT IT MEANS

PPL logbook terms, explained

Dual instruction
Flying with an instructor on board, teaching you. Most of your PPL hours are dual.
Supervised solo
Flying alone, as pilot in command, under your instructor's supervision. Your first solo is usually a single circuit.
Solo cross-country and QXC
Solo flights away from your home airfield. The qualifying cross-country (QXC) is the long one: at least 270 km (150 NM) under Part-FCL, with full-stop landings at two other aerodromes.
Simulator (FSTD) credit
Under Part-FCL, up to 5 of the 45 hours can be flown in an approved flight simulation training device.
FAA night and instrument training
The FAA PPL also needs 3 hours of night training with 10 night take-offs and full-stop landings, and 3 hours of flying by reference to instruments.

PPL QUESTIONS

PPL FAQ

How many hours do you need for a PPL? ▼
Under UK CAA and EASA Part-FCL (FCL.210.A), at least 45 hours of flight instruction, including 25 hours dual and 10 hours supervised solo with 5 hours of solo cross-country. Under the FAA (14 CFR 61.109), at least 40 hours of flight time, including 20 hours of instruction and 10 hours solo. These are minimums: many students need more.
What is the PPL qualifying cross-country? ▼
Under Part-FCL, a solo cross-country flight of at least 270 km (150 NM) with full-stop landings at two aerodromes other than the one you departed from. The FAA's equivalent is a solo cross-country of 150 NM in total with full-stop landings at three points.
Can simulator time count towards a PPL? ▼
Under Part-FCL, up to 5 of the 45 hours of flight instruction can be completed in an approved flight simulation training device (FSTD).
How does PilotMetrics track my PPL? ▼
Pick the PPL(A) and your licence (UK CAA, EASA or FAA) in Settings, and PilotMetrics checks your logged flights against the minimums. Total, dual and solo hours are free; solo cross-country, the qualifying cross-country, night and instrument time are checked in the Pro Logbook.
