✈️ MULTI-CREW PILOT LICENCE · MPL(A)

MPL training,
tracked from day one.

The MPL(A) is an integrated course that trains you for the right-hand seat of a specific airline's aircraft. It needs at least 240 hours of flying training as pilot flying and pilot not flying, in real and simulated flight. PilotMetrics follows your training all the way.

THE MINIMUMS

MPL(A) requirements

The UK CAA and EASA share the same Part-FCL minimums. These are the minimums PilotMetrics checks your logbook against.

WHAT IT MEANS

MPL terms, explained

Pilot flying (PF) and pilot not flying (PNF)
In a multi-crew cockpit one pilot flies and the other monitors and handles the radio and checklists. MPL training counts time in both roles.
Actual and simulated flight
Much of an MPL is flown in simulators, from basic devices up to full flight simulators of the airline's type, alongside time in real aircraft.
Base training
Take-offs and landings in the real airliner before line flying: the course needs 12 as pilot flying.
UPRT
Upset prevention and recovery training: recognising and recovering from unusual attitudes and stalls.

MPL QUESTIONS

MPL FAQ

How many hours do you need for an MPL? ▼
Under UK CAA and EASA Part-FCL (Appendix 5), the MPL(A) integrated course needs at least 240 hours of flying training as pilot flying and pilot not flying, in actual and simulated flight, plus night flying, flight by reference to instruments, UPRT and 12 take-offs and landings as pilot flying in the type.
What's the difference between an MPL and an ATPL? ▼
An MPL is tied to multi-crew operations, usually with a specific airline and aircraft type, and is trained largely in simulators. An integrated or modular ATPL route gives you a CPL with an instrument rating, usable in single-pilot and multi-crew roles. See the ATPL minimums.
Does PilotMetrics count simulator time? ▼
Yes. Simulator sessions are kept separate from aircraft time, and counted towards the minimums that allow them.
